【국문초록】
남북한은 단군을 공통의 국조로 모시는 단일민족이다. 그러나 현재는, (1) 남북한에서 공식적으로 사용되는 단군영정도 서로 다르고, (2) 민간에서 출판된 책에서는 공인 영정과도 다른 다양한 단군의 모습이 사용되고 있다.
남북한의 통일시대를 준비하는 첫 걸음으로 남북한 학자들의 ‘남북한 단군영정 통일사업’을 제안하고자 한다. 이런 필자의 제안이 받아들여진다면, 남북한의 관련 학자와 단체들이 협의하여 ‘남북 공동 학술회의’를 통해 차근차근 ‘통일된 단군영정’을 준비해갈 수 있을 것이다. 이글에서 필자가 제안한 것을 요약하면 아래와 같다.
첫째, 단군영정의 존안(尊顔) 모습은 요서, 요동, 한반도 북부 지역의 청동기시대 유적에서 발견된 여러 두개골의 평균치를 바탕으로 만들어져야한다.
둘째, 두발과 의복(衣服) 문제는 각 분야별 학문적 성과를 바탕으로 남북한 학자들의 고증과 의견 검토를 거쳐 통일된 모습을 영정에 담아내야 한다. 참고로 홍산문화 시기부터 이미 신분이 높은 사람은 두발을 위로 올려 정갈하게 정리하였고, 마제형통관을 쓰고 있었다는 점을 기억해두어야 한다.
셋째, 새로운 남북한 통일 단군영정에는 귀고리를 달아야한다. 귀고리의 모습은 옥결(玉玦)이나 금결(金玦)의 형태일 것으로 본다. 앞서 논의했다시피, (1) 만주일대에서는 신석기시대부터 남녀가 모두 귀고리를 했었고, (2) 북방민족들은 지속적으로 남성도 귀고리를 했었으며, (3) 우리나라에서도 선조 5년(1572)까지는 남성이 귀고리를 했었기 때문이다.
넷째, 현재 사용되는 단군 영정 가운데 어깨와 허리부분을 나뭇잎이나 풀떼기로 장식한 것은 더 이상 사용되어서는 안 된다. 요하문명의 새로운 발견은 단군조선이 건설되는 시기에 이미 발달된 문명사회에 들어섰음을 웅변하고 있기 때문이다.
다섯째, 고조선을 ‘건국’한 단군의 모습은 ‘늙은 할아버지 모습’이어서는 안 되며, (1) 평상시의 ‘건장한 장년의 모습’의 모습과, (2) 비파형동검을 들고 청동제 투구와 갑옷 그리고 청동제 단추로 장식된 장화를 신고 있는 ‘비파형동검은 든 장군 모습’이 모두 가능하고 본다.
물론 이것은 아직은 필자의 개인적 제안일 뿐이다. 이후에, 남북한의 관련 전문가들과의 학술회의, 의견교환 등을 통해 차근차근 단계를 밟아가며 지혜를 모아야할 것이다.

〈Abstract〉
Proposal for Unification of Dangun-portrait of South and North Korea

The two Koreas are a single nation that serves Dangun as a common Korean forefather. At present, however, (1) Dangun-portrait is officially used in North and South Korea are different from each other, and (2) in the books published in the private sector, various forms of Dangun-portraits are also used.
As a first step to prepare for the reunification of the two Koreas, I would like to propose ‘A unification of Dangun-portrait Project between North and South Korea’. If this suggestion is accepted, the scholars and organizations of the two Koreas will be able to prepare a unified Dangun-portrait through the 'Inter-Korean Joint Conference'. Here is a summary of what I suggested in this article.
First, the figure of Dangun should be based on the average figure of the bones found in the Bronze Age ruins of Liaoning Province and the northern part of the Korean peninsula.
Second, based on academic achievement of each field, the problem of Dangun’s hair and clothes should be reviewed by the scholars of North and South Korea. For reference, it should be remembered that those who already had a high status from the era of Hongshan culture(紅山文化: BC 4500-3000), put their hair up and wear a jade-crown.
Third, the newly unified Dangun-portrait should wear earrings. The appearance of the earring is considered to be in the form of jade-ring(玉玦) or gold-ring(金玦). As discussed above, (1) men and women have earrings from the Neolithic period in Manchuria, (2) northern peoples have consistently wear earrings, (3) in Korea, men and women wear earrings until 1572.
Fourth, the decoration of the shoulders and the waist part of the presently used Dangun-portrait with leaves and grasses should no longer be used. It is because the new discovery of the Liaohe civilization(遼河文明) has spoken of the fact that it entered the civilized society which was already developed at the time of the construction of the Dangun-Joseon Dynasty.
Fifth, the figure of Dangun should not be 'a old grandfather'. Two kinds of Dangun figures are possible. Normal figure of Dangun is 'a healthy adult man'. And another one is decorated with mandolin-shaped bronze sword, bronze helmet, and a Boots with bronze button. That is a General's appearance.
Of course this is still my personal suggestion. After that, we should gather up wisdom by taking steps along the way through conferences and exchanges of opinions with related specialists of the two Koreas.
