<논문 요약>
향교는 유교를 교육시키던 국립 교육기관이다. 향교는 각각 3개의 문으로 구성된 외삼문과 내삼문이 있는데, 이들 문에는 다양한 태극 문양이 그려져 있다.
현재 한국에는, (1) 234개 향교에, (2) 외삼문 228개와 내삼문이 230개 총 458개의 문이 남아 있다. 이들 458개의 문에 그려진 태극 문양의 배치를 조사한 결과는 아래와 같다.
첫째, 외삼문 228개, 내삼문 230개 총 458개의 문을 대상으로 태극 문양의 배치 유형을 조사한 결과 제1유형부터 제15유형까지 15가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있다.
둘째, 458개 중 태극문양이 없는 97개를 제외한 361개의 문들 가운데, (1) 음양태극이 3문에 다 그려진 제8유형(2 ․ 2 ․ 2)이 196개 42.79%로 가장 많고, (2) 음양태극이 1곳만 그려진 제13유형(0 ․ 2 ․ 0 혹은 × ․ 2 ․ ×)이 77개로 16.81% 두 번째로 많으며, (3) 삼일태극이 3문에 모두 그려진 제1유형(3 ․ 3 ․ 3)이 50개 10.91%로 세 번째로 많이 보인다.
셋째, 태극 문양이 없는 97개를 제외한 361개의 문들 가운데, (1) 3문에 모두 삼일태극만 그려진 것이 56개로 15.51%, (2) 1-3개의 문에 삼일태극만 그려진 것은 67개 18.56%, (3) 삼일태극이 1개라도 그려진 것은 83개로 22.99%이다.
넷째, 이러한 정황은 조선시대 유학자들이 삼일태극을 음양태극과 구별되는 상징으로 분명히 인식하고 사용하였다는 것을 보여주는 것이다.
다섯째, 361개의 문들 가운데는, (1) 3문에 모두 음양태극만 그려진 것이 198개로 54.85%, (2) 1-3개의 문에 음양태극만 그려진 것은 모두 276개 76.45%, (3) 음양태극이 1개라도 그려진 것은 모두 247개로 68.42%이다.
여섯째, 지역별로 보면, (1) 경기, 충남, 전북, 경부 지역에 상대적으로 음양태극 문양의 비율이 높고, (2) 강원, 충북 지역에서는 상대적으로 삼일태극 문양의 비율이 높다.
성리학을 가르쳤던 국가 교육기관인 향교에서 삼일태극과 음양태극 문양이 공존하였고, 이 둘을 분명히 다른 상징으로 구분하여 사용하였음을 알 수 있다. 따라서 그동안 연구가 미진했던 삼일태극에 대한 다양한 분야의 연구가 필요하다.

<Abstract>
A Study on the Combined Types of Taiji Patterns(Sam-il Taiji: 三一太極, Yin-Yang Taiji: 陰陽太極) at the Gates(Outer 3-door Gate: 外三門, Inner 3-door Gate: 內三門) of Korean Hyang-gyo(鄕校)

‘Hyang-gyo(鄕校)’ is the Confucian temple and school to teach local students in the Joseon Dynasty period. It is the National Institutes of Confucian Education. There are two kinds of gates in ‘Hyang-gyo’. One is ‘Outer 3-door Gate(外三門)’ and the other is ‘Inner 3-door Gate(內三門)’. In general, each gate have 3 doors, many gates are decorated with various kinds of Taiji patterns.
Today, there are (1) 234 ‘Hyang-gyo’, (2) 228 ‘Outer 3-door Gates(外三門)’, and (3) 230 ‘Inner 3-door Gates(內三門)’ left in Korea. Of the 458 Outer or Inner 3-door gates, 361 gates have many kinds of Taiji patterns.
The results of the survey on the combined types of Taiji patterns on the total of 458 gates are as follows.
First, the combined types of ‘Yin-Yang Taiji(陰陽太極, )’ and ‘Sam-il Taiji三一太極: , Three-in-one Taiji)’ patterns were classified into 15 kinds of types.
Second, among the 361 gates(excluding 97 gates without Taiji patterns), (1) the most common type is ‘Type 8’ which has ‘3 Yin-Yang Taiji’(196 gates, 42.79%), (2) ‘Type 13’ which has ‘1 Yin-Yang Taiji’ is the second one(77 gates, 16.81%), (3) and ‘Type 1’ which has ‘3 Sam-il Taiji’ is the third one(50 gates, 10.91%).
Third, among the 361 gates, (1) 56 gates(15.51%) have ‘3 Sam-il Taiji’, (2) 67 gates(18.56%) have ‘only 1-3 Sam-il Taiji’, and (3) 83 gates(22.99%) have ‘any pattern with Sam-il Taiji’.
Fourth, This situation shows that the Confucian scholars of the Joseon Dynasty clearly recognized and used the ‘Sam-il Taiji’ as a distinct symbol from the ‘Yin-Yang Taiji’.
Fifth, among the 361 gates (excluding 97 gates without Taiji pattern), (1) 198 gates(54.85%) have ‘3 Yin-Yang Taiji’, (2) 276 gates(76.45%) have ‘only 1-3 Yin-Yang Taiji’, and (3) 247 gates(68.42%) have ‘any pattern with Yin-Yang Taiji’.
Sixth, in terms of regions, the proportion of the ‘Yin-Yang Taiji’ is relatively high in Gyeonggi, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, and Kyungbu provinces. And the proportion of the ‘Sam-il Taiji’ is relatively high in Gangwon and Chungbuk provinces.
In the end, ‘Sam-il Taiji’ and ‘Yin-Yang Taiji’ are coexisted on the gate of Hyang-gyo in Korea. And they were clearly distinguished as different symbols. Therefore, it is necessary to study ‘Sam-il Taiji’ in various fields which have not been studied in the past.
